STATUS:                    Full-time (exempt)

The National Center for Learning Disabilities' (NCLD) mission is to ensure success for all individuals with learning disabilities in school, at work, and in life by empowering parents, enabling young adults, transforming schools, and creating policy and advocacy impact.

NCLD’s Online Communications team is seeking a Web Editor to write, edit, and produce online content that supports the Online Communications team’s goals of growing online audience and increasing engagement with parents, educators, and young adults with LD and other learning difficulties. The Web Editor will be responsible for helping define and maintain a consistently energetic and informative voice across platforms (web, social media, email). He or she must have an intuitive grasp of how people engage online and take the initiative to identify and implement data-driven and creative online strategies.

The Web Editor will also be focused on—but not limited to—creating and managing content that compels parents, educators, and young adults to understand education policies and to advocate for individuals with learning disabilities. This person reports to the Associate Director, Online Communications, and works closely with other members of the Online Communications team and the Public Policy Director.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Write and/or edit online (website, email, social media) copy, focusing on (but not limited to) policy- and advocacy-related content, by:

    • Managing the timely production and posting of articles and other publications, blogs, online events, and multimedia products featuring video and audio
    • Maintaining accuracy, style, format and keyword consistency, and branding
    • Working with team members to create new design elements, such as tools, forms, or templates that enhance the presentation of material, as needed
  • Work with Online Communications team to:

    • Increase constituency and constituency engagement on web, email, and social media
    • Support the implementation of strategies to retain and grow online audiences
    • Implement strategies to market NCLD products and events through customized email correspondence
  • Analyze web, email, and social media metrics to conceptualize, plan, and implement:

    • Strategies that drive users to take action
    • Content that will enhance parents’, educators’ and young adults’ understanding of learning disabilities in general, along with education and special education laws and policies that affect individuals with learning disabilities
    • Tactics that engage parents and other community members to advocate for individuals with LD
    • Tactics that drive young adults with LD to self-advocate
  • Work with Online Communications and Public Policy team to refine online voice and editorial strategy
  • Identify, hire, and manage consultants/freelancers as needed

Internal Communications/Teamwork:
  • Assist Associate Director as needed, to:

    • Manage relationships with various consultants and vendors, including overseeing delivery of goods and services and processing of invoices for payment
  • Play a major role in data interpretation, including gathering metrics in Google Analytics and assuring that content strategy and dissemination decisions are data-informed
  • Participate in planning for grant proposal development, as needed
  • Other duties, as assigned by supervisor

Ideal Skills, Experience, and Qualifications:
  • Minimum two years’ experience working in online editorial. Nonprofit experience not required.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills. Ideal candidate should consider him/herself a “wordsmith” and have a passion for linguistic subtleties and tone.
  • Ability to turn around clean copy at a fast pace, with a knack for interpreting complex copy (e.g., public policy or legal language) into clear and accessible prose.
  • Experience with Google Analytics and data interpretation and a track record of planning and adjusting strategy based on metrics.
  • Experience using a CMS (Joomla experience a plus) and online advocacy and email tools (Convio preferred).
  • Deep understanding of how to build and retain an online audience. Ideal candidate will have varying levels of expertise in:

    • search engine optimization
    • Google and Facebook ads
    • website information architecture
    • email acquisition
    • interactive design and multimedia (videos, podcasts, webinars)
  • Demonstrated social media savvy (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Pinterest, Google+).
  • Familiarity with Photoshop and/or professional design experience a plus.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, with individuals and cross-disciplinary teams, both internal and external to NCLD.
  • Flexible work style, positive attitude, and commitment to teamwork.
  • High energy, ability to work in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple planned and unplanned projects. The ideal candidate is someone who takes the initiative to move projects forward and with good judgment.
  • Completion of Bachelor’s level program.
