Kcory Woltz – Personal Statment

Love + Support = Success

My learning disability has made it difficult for me to do things at home, school and in my community. When I was younger it was hard to play video games since there was always something to read or memorize. In the second grade it was difficult to stay on task and keep up with the rest of the class. I found myself falling behind and did not understand why. While in the community hanging out with friends was also challenging, since I would get lost directional wise or if I was in the store to purchase something my computation was not adequate. These are just a few ways my learning disability has affected me in school and in the community.

How I was able to overcome the barriers that were presented in my life was with a lot of support from my family and some supportive teachers. They say something in me I had not yet actualized. For instance my toot of six years introduced me to the blue strip that I placed over words while I was reading that blocked the glare from the fluorescent light bulbs. A few years later, I went to the eye doctor and obtained the specific glasses with a tint that could block out the fluorescent lighting, thereby lessening the stumbling block of reading. Another way I was able to overcome these barriers was when my family demanded a defined IEP dictating the supplemental services of extra testing time, pullout support, extended time, textbooks at home, and home tutoring. Consequently, I received a spell checker, books on C.D., in class support, study guides and a tool I did not particularly like to use, the live scribe.

The people who have been there for me are my mother,  Grandmother Joanne, Aunt Miss Jacqueline Fair, Mr.s Dixon who is my tutor, Mr. Granderson who was my former guidance counselor and mentor, Mrs. Diane Asbury who is a confidant, Mr. Floyd Ruffin who has given me moral support, Miss Christopher and Miss Shupe, who were my resource teachers. My Aunt Jacqueline has been there through the long nights of homework, projects, book reports and papers. She made sure I was given equal opportunities just like every other student in my school. Her advocacy had taught me to stand up of myself as well for my academic achievements. As a result of the strong advocacy  I met this wonderful lady in sixth grade named Mrs. Susanne Dixon who has been there for me for the last six years. Our’s is a story that is similar to the movie, “Blindside.” Although the main character’s family life did nit resemble mine, I could identify with being invisible in school until she found me. Her commitment had caused her to tutor me during the summer months, extra evenings and she has worked non stop, giving me a stern lecture as well when I needed it. I don’t know where i should be without her love and support.

I will attend Union County College in Cranford to acquire the recommendation of medical clearance in the medical CPR and Fist Aid requirement course as a prerequisite. Following  in the same school I will complete the EMT program to become state licensed and certified to perform BLS (basic life-saving skills).

The volunteering in EMT work will give me the experience in the field of study I am interested in, which is paramedics to help save lives.

I am proud of the progress I have made in school, it has taken hard work and a relentless support team. The Allegra Ford Thomas Scholarship will help me accomplish this goal by assisting me financially in the time of need. My single mother has worked unceasingly to support me and my sister. I want to have the chance to obtain a skill to intern help her and my family.
