NCLD Statement on Trump’s FY 2018 Budget Proposal

For Immediate Release
March 16, 2017

Mimi Corcoran, President & CEO, National Center for Learning Disabilities says Trump Administration’s FY 2018 Budget Proposal Undermines Public Education

“President Trump’s proposed budget undermines public education and fails to support our nation’s teachers and students. A $9 billion cut to the federal education budget is a direct attack on efforts to ensure a high-quality public education for all students.

The budget provides no additional investment in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) – a program that has been underfunded for decades. The budget also completely eliminates grants for teacher professional development under Title II, comprehensive literacy grants to states, and dozens of other programs that provide much needed support and services to students and teachers.  In place of these critical programs that improve public schools for all students, the President’s proposal includes funding for a private school voucher program that only offers choice to a few.

NCLD stands for protecting the rights of our students with disabilities and quality public education. NCLD calls on Congress to invest in education and uphold our nation’s longstanding commitment to students, teachers, and families.”
