Protections During a Job interview

The same laws that protect you from discrimination on the job also protect you during an interview. At a job interview, the prospective employer is not permitted to ask if you have a disability. You may want to wait until after you are offered a job to disclose your learning disability  and your need for accommodations.

Once you are on the job, an employer cannot discriminate against you because of your disability. For example, your employer may not:

  • Overlook you for promotion based solely on your disability.
  • Refuse to give you training if it is offered to people in similar jobs.
  • Fire you just because you have a learning disability.

Under the law, employers at a workplace with at least fifteen employees must provide reasonable accommodations for your learning disability. Keep in mind that you must disclose your learning disability and ask for accommodations .

If you know your rights, you will be able to approach the job search process with confidence. You also will be able to negotiate with your employer for any reasonable accommodations that will help you succeed.

  1. Protections During a Job interview
How do you deal with a manager who allows another supervisor to disobey all policies and procedures, fabricate a story, tries to fire me, then when they realize they can't change the wording of my post orders or job description to say some thing it never did say . I greivines it through my union, they wish me to settle even to the point of allowing the wrong to go on, I had to train some one to be a union steward and still. My employer lies and won't budge. I didn't do any wrong, they are holding me to a higher standard than any other employee has ever been held to. What now? Danny

i went for a job interview a couple months back for a drafting job and everything was goin great during the interview and i told them that i had taken a test for dyslexia and just waitin on the results. i told them that new stuff that comes to me takes me a little bit longer to learn. i didnt get the job but the results show i have a cognitive delay. could i have been discrimination for tellin them that? how do i tell the interviewer that i have a LD? do i tell them after i get the job or before?

  3. Protections During a Job interview
I wish I had known this 10 years ago. I had been hired for a large technical group contracted out to do desktop support for another company. I was on the job little more than a month & was really happy when one day, I mentioned in passing that I was dyslexic, but had overcome and or learned to work with it. I guess I should have known by the look on my boss' face, but I was completely surprised and horrified when she walked me out the next day. No explanation, nothing. Just a "This isn't working out" & out the door. My confidence took a huge hit that day. I really wish I could confront my old boss about that.

Thank you so much for this information...I was unsure of when to disclose my LD to a potential employer.
