Some people with learning disabilities need more intensive services than a community college, university, or vocational-technical school can offer. Life Skills programs are post-secondary educational programs that help young people learn skills needed for independent living.

These programs are provided in a residential setting and often offer training in:

  • Life skills
  • Workplace literacy
  • Social skills development
  • Vocational and career exploration and training
  • Time management
  • Banking and budgeting.

Independent Living Centers are nonprofit, community-based agencies that help people with disabilities achieve and maintain self-sufficient lives within the community. Services offered include advocacy, information and referral, independent living skills training, and peer counseling.

My boyfriend has a 18yo daughter who has just graduated from high school and has LD with reading, She would like to go into a program as a teacher/aid working with young children with LD. She has not applied to any colleges and will have to work or find some sort of situation. She is lost and feels that she just should stay home and take care of her depressed bedridden mother(my mom's choice). Are there any programs/mentoring or internships we can reseach for her in Northern Virginia/DC that could give her some hope. Her father and mother are separating soon to divorse. The family income is below $28k. Can you give me anything for her to get involved with before she is mainstreamed in college or special colleges with programs..Also is there any mental health sevices available. Please any help would be great. thanks, Karen
