Volunteering, Part-time Jobs, and Internships

Many community organizations, social service agencies, and schools accept volunteer help. This is an excellent way for you to get job experience and "try out" a job area to see if it is a good fit for you. Hospitals, fire departments, schools, nursing homes, homeless shelters, community literacy programs, day care centers, and professional associations are just a few of the many organizations that use volunteers to help extend their services.

Some of these same organizations, as well as others, offer part-time, paid work. A part-time job is an opportunity to learn about a particular job and to decide if this job matches your interests and abilities. It is also an opportunity to build your marketable skills. When you learn those skills, you can list them on your resume.  You might consider part-time job opportunities in retail stores, restaurants, a local newspaper, community centers, travel agencies, or utility companies, to name a few. If possible, select a part-time job that offers you experience in your chosen career. But, no matter what part-time job you take, even if you decide that it's not the ideal job for you, always be sure to do your best. A good reference from your supervisor will be helpful when applying for future jobs. 

Internships are often available for high school and college students and are typically offered for fixed periods of time, such as a summer breaks or school semesters. Many businesses welcome interns, and these work-based experiences may come with opportunities to earn course credit. Some may also offer a stipend or salary. Check with your guidance counselor or school career center for announcements.
