| About the speaker: Dr. Christopher J. Lonigan is a professor of psychology at Florida State University and the Associate Director of the Florida Center for Reading Research. Dr. Lonigan received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology in 1991 from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. After completing his Ph.D., Dr. Lonigan was awarded a two-year NIH Postdoctoral Fellowship at the John F. Kennedy Center at Vanderbilt University. The majority of Dr. Lonigan's research activities focus on the development of emergent literacy skills during the preschool period and how these skills impact later reading. As a part of this work, Dr. Lonigan has been involved in the development of assessment instruments that measure the key areas of emergent literacy. Additionally, Dr. Lonigan's work focuses on evaluations of preschool interventions and curricula designed to prevent reading difficulties for preschool children who are at-risk for later academic problems. Much of this research has been conducted with funding from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, The U.S. Department of Education, the Administration for Children Youth and Families, and the National Science Foundation. Dr. Lonigan has served on grant review and advisory groups for the National Institutes of Child Health and Human Development, Head Start, National Science Foundation, and the U.S. Department of Education. Dr. Lonigan is a member of the National Early Literacy Panel. In addition to his work in the area of literacy, Dr. Lonigan is involved in research on psychiatric disorders in children as well as the overlap between psychiatric disorders and problems in reading. Dr. Lonigan has served on numerous boards and committees for the American Psychological
Association, including the Committee for the Promotion of Evidence-Based Practice for Children. Dr. Lonigan is on the editorial board of several journals.
