New CAAL Report Urges National Opportunity System for Adults
According to a new report by the Council for Advancement of Adult Literacy, there is a shortage of young people in the education system to fill the nation's future workforce needs. For this reason, CAAL argues for an increased focus of resources and attention on the three million adult education students and 30 to 50 million other adults with low basic literacy skills.

Education Department Unveils Web Site to Combat "Diploma Mills"
In an effort to combat "diploma mills""companies that offer fraudulent degrees and fall outside of the domain of the accreditation process, the U.S. Department of Education recently unveiled a new Web site. The Web site offers students and employers access to a master list of accredited colleges, universities, and career and trade schools

Teachers and the IEP Planning Process
The newly reauthorized Individuals with Disabilities Education Act contains a provision which allows teachers and others to be excluded from Individualized Education Program meetings if the parent and the school district agree in writing that their presence is unnecessary. Instead of being present, teachers would have to provide written input.

New Study on the Effects of New Teacher Induction on Teacher Migration and Attrition
According to the Association for Supervision and Curriculum, high-quality hiring and support practices can positively affect the rate of turnover of staff and the extent to which teachers are effective in the classroom. For example, teachers who have mentors in the same subject area and access to collective induction experiences are less likely to move to another school or to leave the profession.

NCSET Offers a Teleconference on Minority Disproportionality in Special Education
The National Center on Secondary Education and Transition will host a teleconference on March 31, 2005 at 12 pm CST. The teleconference "Minority Disproportionality in Special Education and the Achievement Gap: Common Issues, Shared Solutions" will be hosted by Dr. Anthony Sims from the Institute for Educational Leadership.
