NCLD to Hold Chat on Early Identification of Reading Difficulties Feb. 8.
The National Center for Learning Disabilities plans to hold an online chat on early identification of reading difficulties featuring professional advisory board member       and leading reading researcher, Dr. Joe Torgesen. The chat will be moderated by NCLD’s early literacy specialist, Deanna Stecker. The chat site is www.ldtalk.org and is will be open for question submission on Feb. 1. We encourage   all NCLD constituents to submit questions   and to participate in the live chat.

New Working Paper on Adult Education
The Council for Advancement of Adult Literacy recently released its final working paper in a series on adult education/literacy and community colleges. The report, Forging New Partnerships:     Adults and Developmental Education in Community Colleges looks at the relationship between developmental and adult education in community college settings, the nature of the collaboration between the two programs in colleges that provide both and characteristics that foster collaboration.

New Yale Study Finds Link Between Reading and Attention Disorders
According to a new study at Yale, reading and attention disorders both seem to stem from the same primitive part of the brain that governs thinking and muscle control. A study of 27 people ages 18 to 24 revealed that participants with attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder and those with reading disorders displayed low activity in their basal ganglia.

Using Auditory Processing Strategies to Address Behavior Problems
A new study from Australia suggests that auditory processing strategies can address both literacy and behavior problems in at-risk students. The study finds that screening student auditory processing abilities can help identify students at risk for lower literacy and inattentive behaviors, which allows for the application of early intervention strategies.

Talking About Your Child's LD
A new article from Schwab Learning discusses the benefits of talking openly to family members about children's learning disabilities. The article discusses, among other things, denial, sibling reactions and reasons to talk openly about LD.

Understanding ADHD
The American Federation of Teachers recently published a fact sheet on ADHD on its Web site. The fact sheet discusses many issues related to ADHD including diagnosis and treatment.

National Center for Learning Disabilities' Art & Poetry Contest
Entries due February 15, 2005
Every year the National Center for Learning Disabilities conducts a national art and poetry competition, which is highlighted at our annual NCLD Benefit, Voices of Our Children, Voices of our Future.    A first-place prize of $100 and two second prizes of $50 will be awarded to the winning schools in each category.  All winners will be publicly acknowledged on NCLD's award winning Web site, www.LD.org, and at the benefit on April 21, 2005 in New York City. This year's theme is HEAR ME OUT; NCLD is asking all our contestants to artistically interpret the following:
