High School Graduation Rate Declines The Education Pipeline in the United States, 1970-2000, a new study by researchers at the National Board on Educational Testing and Public Policy at Boston College, reveals major declines in high school graduation rates. The study finds that in many states, fewer than three in four 9th graders go on to earn a high school degree.

The National Center for Education Statistics in the Institute of Education Sciences recently released a new report, Remedial Education at Degree-Granting Postsecondary Institutions in Fall 2000. The report indicates that nearly one third of the freshman who entered higher education in fall 2000 enrolled in a remedial reading, writing, or math course.

A new study by the nonpartisan Center on Education Policy reports that No Child Left Behind has been successful in making improved student achievement a high-visibility goal. However, the study also notes that states will need more funding to meet proficiency targets.

The Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development reports that though both IDEA and NCLB call for the inclusion of students with disabilities in standards and assessments, there is an inherent conflict between the two laws. While IDEA focuses on meeting the needs of individual students, NCLB is designed to hold schools and districts accountable for all student equally.
