Preventing Summer Reading and Learning Loss
The long hot days of summer provide lots of time to read. It's also a time to make sure kids don't fall behind. Researchers commonly find that students score lower on standardized tests at the end of summer than they do at the beginning. Tips for a Successful IEP Meeting
As a parent, do you approach IEP meetings with fear and dread? If so, here are some suggestions from Schwab Learning that will help you feel more at ease and able to participate as a full member of the team that plans your child's special education program.

Some of the statements made to parents at IEP Meetings are "conversation stoppers" - comments that create barriers and can prevent the IEP Team from working cooperatively to develop effective special education services and supports for students with disabilities. Find common "conversation stoppers," some information about what may be the real issues of concern and suggestions for how parents can respond in a forceful but respectful way in NCLD's Parent Center toolkit.



Head Start's 8th National Research Conference
Online registration is now open for Head Start's 8th National Research Conference, which is to be held June 26-28, 2006 in Washington, DC at the Hyatt Regency on Capitol Hill. The conference brings practitioners, researchers, administrators, and policy makers together in a collaborative and creative setting, and emphasizes ACF's commitment to improving child and family well-being through high-quality research and evaluation. The theme of this year's conference is "Serving Children Through Partnership and Collaboration." Register by May 22nd to receive a conference program in the mail.

Pre-college Summer Programs for Students with Disabilities
The HEATH Resource Center at The George Washington University has compiled a list of pre-college summer programs for students with disabilities to help them prepare for college and enhance college performance.  Pre-college programs are typically held on campus in residence halls or as day training, leisure, and recreational activities, and usually include some computer training.

PBS Blog Examines How Technology is Changing Education
PBS recently unveiled a new blog called learning.now, which addresses how new technology and Internet culture are significantly affecting the ways educators teach and children learn. The blog is aimed at K-12 educators, and will help guide them through new communications devices, Web sites, and cultural shifts brought about by technology. Career Exploration Program for Youth and Adults with Disabilities
Your Employment Selections (YES) is a job preference and career exploration program for youth and adults with disabilities. The YES program is designed to provide participants who have disabilities with information about community jobs, present realistic video from actual job settings, increase choice-making opportunities, and assist with transition planning. The goal is to make youth and adults with disabilities active participants in planning their careers.  YES directly addresses the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) requirement to identify youth's preferences and interests (3 CFR Part B).
