The House just passed H.R.5 (the Student Success Act) to reauthorize the Elementary and Secondary Education Act.
This was a VERY close vote which means we are in a great position moving forward. Basically, half the House opposed the bill! While we would have liked for it to fail, this close vote is a really strong statement that the bill lacks support and will help us in the negotiations to come.
Thank you to everyone who responded to our call for action! A record number – 1,946 – of our parent advocates took action and contacted their Representative. In addition, we engaged parents and educators on Facebook and Twitter and can build on the new relationships we formed going forward.
What’s next? The Senate will vote on its version of the bill later this year, and, if it passes, the Senate and House will meet to see if they can agree on a single version to go to the President. So what does that mean? We have lots of opportunities to continue to try and get a bill that will really work for students with learning difficulties and disabilities. Exciting and challenging times lie ahead.
