NCLD Executive Director, James Wendorf, proposes ten commitments for the New Year: thoughts on what to do to when the celebrations are over.
- Reach out to the people you know who struggle to learn—renew your faith in their abilities and strengths.
- Reach out to a teacher, principal or other educator—express confidence in their desire to help all of their students succeed.
- Reach out to a parent or other family member—recognize their impact as their child’s most effective advocate.
- Reach out to a sibling of a child who struggles—acknowledge that their journey has its own substantial challenges.
- Reach out to www.LD.org and other trusted sources of information—share something with a friend who needs to know more about learning disabilities.
- Reach out to your local school board—let them know how important it is to set high expectations for students with LD so they can achieve a regular high school diploma.
- Reach out to your local newspaper—write a letter to the editor urging the community to support students with disabilities so they are college and career ready.
- Reach out to your local colleges and universities—let them know you support efforts to make instructional materials truly accessible to students who have disabilities that interfere with reading print.
- Reach out to Congress via NCLD’s Action Alert Center—tell them that schools need to remain accountable for all students, including those with learning disabilities.
- Reach inside—and celebrate your own commitment to making life better for all who struggle to learn!
