As any parent knows, where a child attends school can make a big difference. Students with learning disabilities (LD) need schools where educational best practices are driven by caring, committed adults who are dedicated to the success of all children. NCLD’s annual Pete and Carrie Rozelle Award recognizes two New York City area schools that are particularly successful in addressing the learning and social/emotional needs of students with LD and others who struggle with learning. This year, we were pleased to present the award to The High School for Excellence and Innovation and The Churchill School and Center at our “Celebrating Our Schools” event in New York City on November 5th.

Both schools have remarkable learning and social/behavioral student outcomes and a commitment to data-based decision making and student progress monitoring. They have demonstrated K-12 transition planning activities to help students graduate with a regular high school diploma, prepared for life after high school. They have ongoing professional development opportunities that help staff continue to improve their practice.

The High School for Excellence and Innovation (HSEI) is a Manhattan public school with a unique mission: to provide transitional support for students who struggled with seemingly insurmountable challenges in middle school. HSEI’s students arrive at the school “over-age and under-credited”—they have failed multiple classes or grades in their K-8 experience. Many have documented LD or other learning struggles. But the positive culture and personal support offered by HSEI helps their students beat the odds. With an innovative curriculum model and strong community partnerships, HSEI gives students who are off-track before high school what they need to catch up and earn their high school diploma fully prepared to succeed in post-secondary education or employment. The Churchill School and Center is a Manhattan independent school exclusively dedicated to educating K-12 students with LD. Churchill’s pioneering “Teaching Learning Model” integrates personalized learning profiles, adapted and updated curricula, and student progress monitoring to continually improve student outcomes both inside and outside of the classroom.
