Statement from Mimi Corcoran on President Trump’s FY 2019 Education Budget

Mimi Corcoran, President & CEO, National Center for Learning Disabilities:
President Trump’s FY 2019 Education Budget Fails Our Public Schools

WASHINGTON—The National Center for Learning Disabilities (NCLD) calls on Members of Congress to reject President Trump’s FY 19 education budget proposal and the misguided priorities it advances. The President plans to cut $3.6 billion from education funding, impacting nearly 40 programs and jeopardizing our public schools’ ability to provide all students with a high-quality education.

The President’s proposed budget eliminates funding for critical programs that support all students, including those with learning and attention issues. The budget would completely eliminate funding for safe, supportive learning environments and well-rounded programming, including afterschool and literacy education programs. Additionally, the President’s budget fails to support educators by eliminating grants that support teacher development and improve instruction.

This proposal does not invest in the success of the 90% of students nationwide who attend public schools. Instead, it prioritizes only a fraction of students by making $1 billion available for private school vouchers — unproven programs that fail to protect the rights of students with disabilities and their families.

NCLD is dedicated to working with leaders in Congress and the administration to advance policies that allow public schools to be safe, supportive environments for students and educators. The federal government should not only increase funding for the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), which serves more than 6 million students with disabilities and has been underfunded for decades, but should also invest in programs that support the whole child, provide a strong foundation for student success, and bring evidence-based practices and innovation to our nation’s public schools.
