Overview of Our Time, Our Vote

FACT:

In 2016, 41% of all eligible voters with disabilities didn’t vote because something about their disability prevented them.

FACT:

There are 35 million voting-age people with disabilities who could vote in the 2020 election.

FACT:

1 in 5 Americans have learning disabilities and attention issues, including dyslexia, processing disorders, and ADHD.

For voters with learning disabilities and attention issues, voting can be a daunting experience:

Getting Ready to Vote
  • knowing where to vote
  • learning about the candidates and their position on issues
  • preparing documentation needed for accessing accommodations
  • securing an absentee ballot (if needed)
At the Polls
  • standing in long lines
  • securing an absentee ballot (if needed)
  • lots of small text to read and boxes to fill in
  • voting machines that are complicated to operate
  • fast-paced voting process and knowing how to ask for help

All of these factors can add up to an experience that leaves voters feeling uncertain, intimidated and discouraged. And individuals with learning and attention issues need easy access to knowledge and tools that assist them with registering and voting. OUR TIME, OUR VOTE is intended to fill that need.

At the National Center for Learning Disabilities, a new initiative was launched to celebrate and augment the voices of young adults with learning and attention issues and ensure they never face barriers to civic participation. We believe every voter should have the knowledge, resources, and tools needed to vote with confidence and ease and that young adults can play a powerful role in shaping the future of civic participation.

Now is the perfect time to:

Encourage the civic engagement of the 1 in 5 individuals with learning and attention issues

Empower voters with learning and attention issues to participate in the voting process

Create and disseminate new resources that improve the accessibility of voting and empower voters with disabilities to engage in the electoral process

OUR TIME, OUR VOTE is a nonpartisan, nonpolitical initiative launched by the National Center for Learning Disabilities. We do not endorse any party or candidate or engage in lobbying that seeks to influence the outcomes of elections. This initiative aims to engage young adults with learning and attention issues, and their families and friends, in civic participation efforts. Our goals are to empower young adults with the knowledge necessary for them to vote, and to educate the general public about the voting needs of, and stigma faced by, people with learning disabilities and attention issues. We will work to remove barriers that prevent all people with disabilities from voting.
