Joey Hunziker is the director of leadership and organizing at the National Center for Learning Disabilities. He brings a wealth of experience and a deep passion for cultivating the next generation of leaders for the learning rights movement. His strategic focus nurtures and devlops young leaders to build confidence and drive positive change in their communities using their experiences and talents.

Throughout his career, Joey has demonstrated exceptional leadership skills and an unwavering commitment to empowering young adults. Before joining NCLD, Joey gained valuable experience at WestEd, a national research and technical assistance organization, and at the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO). While at CCSSO, Joey played a pivotal role in leading the Innovation Lab Network, a group of state education agencies focused on promoting personalized, competency-based education through policy and practice. His work with the Innovation Lab Network emphasized equity and access for students with disabilities, English language learners, students of color, and those living with trauma. Additionally, he provided crucial technical assistance to a cohort of three states to help their education agencies plan, develop, and implement their ESSA plans, developing expertise in areas such as innovative assessment, social and emotional learning, school climate and culture, and educational equity.

Joey’s background as an educator and facilitator has significantly shaped his career. He began his professional journey as an actor, arts educator, and program manager in upstate New York. During this time, he closely collaborated with middle and high school students, as well as college students, to create programs that fostered closer connections between the community, school systems, and local nonprofits. This experience in community engagement strongly influences his work in the LD movement.

Joey’s lifelong love of learning and dedication to education have been powerful driving forces. His contributions have made a positive impact on the lives of students and educators alike, further cementing his role as a key leader within the LD movement.
